Silver Rain’s services are almost as many (not quite) as the drops in a downpour. The millions, and thousands of millions, of small actions and decisions, and refinements, necessary for a good piece of narrative nonfiction or story to appear certainly approach the droplets of a thunderstorm.
Each drop, each service, is a whole world in itself, filled with the nuance and judgement and discernment each individual subject and writer imparts to it. We await your order, and (as the phrase in Spanish goes), estamos a sus órdenes: we are at your service, and accept the details of your desired prose, story, or narrative nonfiction gladly.

Writing Services
Whatever you prefer, give us three core words or lines which sum up the nature of your request: human, 19th-century expansion, national parks. Or Japan, Dejima, Sakoku (the period of Japanese isolationism). Or the coquí (the frog native to Puerto Rico, introduced to Hawai’i, among other places), El Yunque National Forest, the Taíno. Or (going more speculative): the 23rd century, corporate malfeasance, environmental remedy.

Fiction
Speculative. Light science (and science-based) fiction, all forms, with character and solid landscape and environmental description being strong points. Flash fiction (generally 300 to 1200 words) are specializations, with countless pieces produced since 2018. Suitable for magazines, literary journals, and newspapers; often outside of current, generally ephemeral trends in the speculative literature arena . . .
No gratuitous violence, and the best of humanity, with redemption and development, evolution and epiphany, at the centre of the narrative. Decency, with ‘human nature’ much more, and better, than it has been in recent centuries and millennia.
The possibility for a new type of human, with humility and decency, and moderation, often plays central roles in our fiction, whether realistic, literary, or speculative. Traditional notions of genre are often avoided, with the result a nice, new, fresh take on writing for pleasure and illumination.
Creative & Narrative Nonfiction
Short pieces, with occasional longform narrative nonfiction. Past pieces have included human interest in authors, (narrative) historians, researchers, and ‘ordinary people’ (a group to which we admit, unreservedly, belonging). Dozens of interviews may go into a piece, with just a fraction of the material entering the final version of the story.
All subjects are welcome, but generally, we gravitate towards the human, stories of people rising to the best of themselves, or developing into the best of themselves, with redemption, healing, and service (to something greater than oneself) prime among the narratives.
Simple, creative nature- and especially garden-related writing is also one of our specialties and passions . . . the leaf of a plant, or the raindrop (Silver Rain!) balancing delicately on its edge, holding just as much fascination for us and our internal, rather romantic and lyrical eye, as the narrative full of heated, (time-) pressured (and often highly American) action and discovery. All have their place, however, in the imagination, and we welcome all such projects and commissions as well.
Poetry
Our times being as they are, we do not neglect poetry, which often makes an appearance in both our fiction and nonfiction prose—and indeed, it is sorely needed, a balm to lost and often confused souls. In a world wracked with anxiety, with ever-increasing demands made on our precious time (our one true commodity, when one comes down to it), poetry can heal, help regenerate, make new, seal and make painless old wounds—just look around you, and the poetry is there, with the right eyes and ears to see, to hear, to feel it.
Our poems will have greater place in our future publication, The Silver Rain Quarterly. (First issued slated for publication in 2026.)
Proofreading
The foundation of any good, readable text. Errors—as the English language is currently commodified and standardized, for ease of understanding across classes, regions, and countries—in spelling, syntax, and grammar, or higher up, metaphor, will impede the reading process and leave your readers scratching their heads, rereading not to read, but to try to figure out what you were trying to say, or get across, or evoke, in the first instance.
This is where Silver Rain can come in, and quickly, getting your text in order for publication, or simply for yourself, or family and friends, depending on your intended audience. Give us the criteria by filling out our simple Silver Rain Service Survey, and we’ll see that your text comes out right, and above all, understandable.
Editing
The next level up in the review and revision process. (We’ll refrain from calling it ‘Gold’ or ‘Platinum’ or anything like that, although it certainly, in terms of quality, is exactly this.) This includes proofreading, and a search—in some cases, light soul-searching—for the exact idiom, the correct phrase or verb or time- or age-appropriate expression, for your work, whether fiction, narrative nonfiction or poetry.
We have experience with fiction (including flash fiction and short stories), speculative work up to 15,000 words, memoir, nonfiction articles and narrative essays, and hundreds of poems in a few schools, languages, and time periods.
Translation
This facet of Silver Rain may, in fact, set us apart from most other groups as well as individual writers. We know languages. This means, in addition to English, which has become a sort of lingua franca for our spinning globe in the middle of the universe, at the edge of the Milky Way, for a billion and half of the eight billion and counting human inhabitants of this planet, we know other languages, often also linguae francae in their regions: Russian, Spanish, and Portuguese, and the voluminous Chinese language and its worldwide linguistic diaspora, are our daily fare, alongside English.
We read El País and El Mundo alongside The New York Times and The New Yorker, finding the correspondences, the inconsistencies, the common and uncommon threads of storytelling, among two of just many great languages of the world.
Need help, an extra eyeball, with a literary fiction or nonfiction translation, to or from English? Let us know, we’ll be more than glad, and are wholly qualified, to help. Languages: English, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, and Chinese, and to a lesser extent, Japanese, French, and German. Special assistance with Farsi (Western Persian), Kazakh, and Uzbek, as well as certain native languages of the Americas (Quechua, Guaraní), is also available.
